The federal government will pay for every doctor to implement electronic health records, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Dr. David Blumenthal told The Wall Street Journal.

“There’s a good chance that the current funding will be enough to equip every doctor’s office in America with electronic record keeping,” Dr. Blumenthal said. “I believe that physicians and many hospitals will come to the conclusion that in order to be an adequate professional and to hold their head up with other doctors, they’re going to have to be able to manipulate health care records electronically.”

Only 60 percent of Americans believe their medical records are safe online, according to a survey by NPR, Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard School of Public Health. Three-fourths believe their EHR can he hacked.

Two-thirds of 1,238 people surveyed nationally say health care will improve with EHRs. Seventy percent believe it will improve the coordination of care among doctors.

By the way, CBS profiled Inova Fairfax Hospital outside Washington, D.C. where they saved my life after a heart attack. Mine was before EHRs, but thanks to a great staff that took care of me. Ironically, the hospital is literally on Gallows Road because in the old days it’s where they took people to hang them.

You hear it all the time. People think you’re just sitting on the couch, eating chips, watching TV and popping in a few codes during commercials.

You try to explain you’re working, but they’re not listening. Even worse, they ask you to run an errand for them. Pick up a kid from school. Hey, you’re not busy. You’re at home.

Listen, there’s no reasoning with these people. Just let it go. But, don’t go native, either. You need to establish some ground rules or else you will be slacking away your days and going broke.

1. Have a plan. Establish your hours and try to stick to them. If it’s 9 to 3, dedicate that time to the job.

2. Create your work space. You need a desk, filing space, phone. It may be a spare bedroom or the entire basement. Whatever works. And remember, it’s a nice tax writeoff.

3. Close the door during crunch time. For those with older children, create boundaries so they’re not constantly bugging you for stuff they can handle themselves or can wait.

4. Stay on course. It’s easy to get distracted by, well, anything. Your home has lots going on and you’re the hub. Write down your goals for the day and cross them off so they get done.

5. Have some fun. You’re at home, not jail. You’re doing this to enjoy not working in an office so don’t feel guilty if you do take advantage of the setting.

It was bad enough when Wal-Mart put the mom-and-pop companies out of business. Now they’re coming for you.

Wal-Mart is teaming with Dell and eClinical Works to provide turnkey electronic medical records for small medical practices. Looking for a slice of the $19 billion package for EMRs, Wal-Mart will provide hardware, software, maintenance and training.

While that’s not what you’re into, it doesn’t take much of a leap for Wal-Mart to crossover to medical billing. We’ll see.

Have your doctors fully committed to converting to electronic health records? Have you?

There’s money to be made for both you and clients. The new federal stimulus package includes $19 billion for information technology. Now as much as IT can make practically anything from instant tacos to increased taxes, think about electronic health records as an alternate revenue stream. A doctor’s office that treats Medicare patients using EHR by 2011 will earn $44,000 through stimulus money. An office that heavily treats Medicare patients could earn $63,750 per physician.

So when your clients ask what’s in it for them — tell them besides the increased efficiency of EHRs, the government’s paying big-time money just to convert from paper.

And remember, what’s good for your clients is good for you.

So one of the questions doctors will often ask is why do they need you? Why can’t their office staff do these same things?
